Android 5.0 Available For Samsung Galaxy S5

Users in Poland have reported that Samsung has started an over-the-air update of Galaxy S5 devices.

It is not known when the update will be available in other regions.

Maybe the update will help Samsung to increase sales on the flagship smartphone as sales has been way below expectations so far.

LG was the first company to make the new Android OS available to G3 users, Motorola and Google have also offered Lollipop to their users.

Sony and HTC have announced that they are going to make the update available within shortly as well.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Sales Way Below Expectations

Overall results for Samsung have not been impressive lately, as the electronics giant saw both revenue and profit decrease as the overall smartphone market share dropped from 32% to 25%. In China Xiaomi has taken the top spot and competition is increasing from all sides not just Apple with Motorola, LG and Huawei increasing their market share.

So while the iPhone 6 gave Apple a record quarter and 4 million devices were sold the first day and 10 million over the first weekend, Samsung is struggling with sales of the flagship Galaxy S5.

According to the Wall Street Journal, a big reason for the bad numbers of the mobile division is the fact that the flagship Galaxy S5 is selling well below expectations. Sales for the last three month came in at 12 million units, 40% below what the company had forecasted. The Galaxy S4 sold 16 million units in the same time period.

According to WSJ, sales in China has declined by 50%, the only market which remains stable is the U.S.

Samsung is now increasing their marketing spend and plan to offer more discounts during the holiday season in an attempt to win back market share and clear warehouses.

The company did not make any comments in regards to updates coming to other devices such as the G3 Stylus, G2, L Bello and L Fino but we expect dates for these to come in the next few weeks as well.

LG L 3

Here are some highlights of the new OS:

  • You are always going to be connected with Android L.

“We want to know where you are, and we want to be voice enabled. It shouldn’t matter which device you are using, we should pick up where you left off.” Google said back in June when they first showcased Android L.

Calls, text messaging, notifications etc can all show up on your PC, your search history accounts and apps – everything is synchronized between all your devices.

  • Improved battery life

Google is going to give developers access to the battery use. A battery saver mode is also going to be integrated which can increase the battery life by up to 90 minutes per day.

  • A new design

The new OS is going to have the same look and feel across all platforms.

The look and feel is clean, yet colorful, flat but also dimensional.

One of the biggest improvements that consumers are going to notice are the notifications which are much more user friendly in this version, can be viewed on the lockscreen and are customizable beyond that.

Sony Adopts Apple’s High-End Smartphone Strategy

The high-end smartphone market is extremely competitive and Samsung, HTC, LG, Sony and others have all released at least two flagship models per year in a quest to gain market share and deliver the best hardware and features to consumers.

Only Apple has been in a position to release just one new high-end device per year and looking at the most recent iPhone 6 numbers and the record quarter Apple reported, they have been doing it successfully.

According to a report from Digitimes, Sony is now going to adopt the same strategy and only release one new flagship smartphone per year. The reason for the strategy shift is a slowdown in hardware competition and a maturing high-end smartphone segment according to the report.

Apple iPhone 6 and iWatch Event – New Details, Video and Live Stream

There isn’t a day that passes without plenty of new information about the upcoming Apple which will take place in Cupertino tomorrow.

The company is expected to release the new iPhone 6 and the iWatch. When it comes to the iPhone 6, we have seen a number of videos and images leaked already so it seems the round design and the two models, 4.7″ and 5.5″ will are set and no surprises can be expected on that side. We wouldn’t be surprised though if Apple has a few OS / software features to surprise us. The only big thing that has come out in regards to that is the mobile payment system iPhone Wallet for which the company has teamed up with American Express, Visa and MasterCard.

So a day before the launch, another video has surfaced. This time it is supposed to be a model straight from the factory.

The video once again shows the 4.7″ model, so were we right when we reported back in July that the 5.5″ version could be delayed until 2015? We will have to wait until tomorrow to get confirmation on that.

So while it feels like the iPhone 6 has already launched since we have so much information on the device, close to nothing has leaked in regards to the iWatch.

iWatch

The smartwatch market is probably the hottest segment at the moment. In the last few weeks we have seen Samsung, LG and Asus all showcase their latest device. Most recently Motorola officially announced the most anticipated smartwatch to date, the Moto 360. You can find a detailed comparison here.

So the question will be: Can Apple come out and challenge all the other brands with their first new product launch in four years? They have the ecosystem to do so, all they really need to get right is the design and be on par or slightly superior on the feature set. Analysts certainly are positive as they predict the iWatch could sell as many as 60 million units in the first year alone.

You can watch the Apple event life here.

Apple Event confirmed for September 9th – iPhone 6 and iWatch expected to be announced

Apple has now officially send out an invitation to press for an event in Cupertino on September 9th. As we reported previously, the company is expected to release the new iPhone 6 during the event. In the last few days, new rumors have emerged and it now looks like Apple is also going to be unveiling the iWatch, which wasn’t expected to be released until October. If that is the case, it is going to be one of the biggest and most important events for Apple.

The iPhone 6 has to be a real game changer, something the iPhone 5 really wasn’t. LG, HTC and Huwaei are all making headway in the space as Android dominates the overall smartphone market.

The 5.5″ model of the iPhone 6 will position Apple in a segment they have missed out on in recent past so incremental business can be expected from that. A larger model alone will not do the trick however, we need to wait and see what innovative features aside from the sapphire display the new flagship model will have.

It will be more interesting to see though if Apple can come out with a smartwatch that appeals more to consumers than the LG G Watch R and Moto 360.

Analysts are positive the iWatch will be a success. Morgan Stanley predicts that Apple will sell 60 million units in the first year alone!
