Samsung Market Share Continues To Decline, Xiaomi Soars

Samsung continues to see their smartphone market share decline. The Galaxy S5 has sold well below expectations and the South Korean giant has also struggled in China where Xiaomi took the number 1 spot from Samsung earlier this year.

The latest numbers from research firm Gartner reveal that Samsung continues to struggle while the growth continues for Xiaomi.

In the third quarter of 2014 overall smartphone sales increased by 20% thanks to demand in emerging markets.

Smartphones which account for 66% of total mobile sales are gaining traction in emerging markets, especially since the price difference to feature phones continues to decrease.

Samsung is still the largest smartphone maker but has lost almost 8% within a year. Xiaomi has seen the largest growth and are now the 4th largest smartphone manufacturer as market share increased from 1.5% to 5.3%. Huawei holds the third spot but Xiaomi is expected to overtake Huawei as they are growing quicker and are only 0.1% behind. Considering Xiaomi is only for sale in a number of regions the future growth potential is enormous.

Apple sales grew 26% in the third quarter thanks to the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Gartner expects Apple to have the best quarter ever in terms of iPhone sales during the fourth quarter.

“Over the holidays we expect record sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but we should not underestimate the Chinese vendors and local brands,” said Annette Zimmermann, research director at Gartner. “Chinese players will continue to look at expanding in overseas emerging markets. In Europe prepaid country markets and attractive lost-cost LTE phones will also offer key opportunities for these brands.” Gartner expects sales of smartphones to reach 1.2 billion units in 2014.

In terms of OS market share it is no surprise that Android is dominating with 83.1%. iOS holds 12.7% while both Windows and Blackberry declined.

iPhone Market Share More Than Triples

The iPhone 6 has given Apple a record third quarter but if we look at the latest research figures and taking into consideration that Apple has made it available in a lot more countries during this quarter, it is pretty certain that Apple is going to report record iPhone sales.

According to analyst firm Kantar Group, the iPhone has gained a lot of market share in the U.S., Japan, Germany and Great Britain.

In Great Britain the iPhone market share more than tripled from 8.5% to 31%. In Japan it also almost tripled from 17% to 48% while market share in the U.S. increased to 41.5%, up from 32.6%.

In Germany the market share was up 5.1% to 16.9%. According to the report some other regions in the EU decreased and so did the market share in China but could be down to the late launches and the fact that a majority of the market in those regions is in the entry level space.

Some positive news after the class action law suit has made headlines in the last few days.

WhatsApp Update For iPhone 6 (Plus)

It has taken WhatsApp about two month to come up with an update for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Until now the messaging service looked blurry as it was not made for the larger screens. Now it finally supports the native resolution of 1,335 x 750 and 1,920 x 1,080.

The 35 MB update requires iOS 4.3 and up.

iOS 8.1 – Overview of What’s New

Apple has released iOS 8.1 and it has some pretty big new features.

Here is what’s new:

  • Apple Pay – the mobile payment system which was showcased during the September 19th iPhone 6 launch is now officially available
  • Ability to send and receive phone calls and texts from your phone on your Mac
  • iCloud Photo Library
  • Camera Roll is back
  • Instant Hotspot allows you to connect any Apple device to your iPhone via the Wi-Fi settings

So far no major bugs have made the round, a lot of iOS 8.1 users took to social media to report on their experience with Apple Pay.

Apple Responds to Bending iPhone 6 Plus Devices

Earlier this week we reported on the first three users showing bent iPhone 6 Plus devices. It took social media by storm and the issues with iOS 8 completed the shitstorm for Apple.

It took Apple a few days to comment, today they released a statement and said that only nine customers have contacted them about a bent iPhone 6 Plus.

“IPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus meet or exceed all of our high quality standards to endure everyday, real life use,” Apple said.

Apple also pointed out that they have done extensive testing which included bending, a certain amount of pressure and real life scenarios such as sitting.

Given the fact that Apple has seen record sales for the iPhone 6 series and only nine users have reported an issue so far, the whole things is being blown out of proportion. We have seen issues with many other smartphones but the hype surrounding an Apple launch is always unmatched – for better or worse.

Investors though were not to pleased with the recent developments as Apple took a hit during trading today and declined 3.81%.

Apple Pulls iOS 8.0.1- How to Downgrade to iOS 8.0

Not long after Apple released the new iOS 8.0 users to reported a number of issues. Apple quickly released iOS 8.0.1 but that made things even worse. The main issue with the new update was a major one: the loss of cellular service. People also complained about not being able to use Touch ID, issues with third party keyboards and uploading images to apps. Apple quickly pulled the update and released a guide on how to downgrade to iOS 8.0:

  1. Make sure that you’re using the latest version of iTunes.
  2. Connect your iPhone to iTunes.
  3. Back up your iPhone in iTunes on your Mac or PC. iCloud backups won’t restore to earlier versions, including iOS 8.0.
    1. Download the file below that corresponds to your device:
    2. iPhone 6
    1. Select the file you just downloaded by doing one of these in iTunes:
    2. Mac: Press the Option key and click Check for Update.
  • Windows: Press the Shift key and click Check for Update.
  1. Press Update to install iOS 8 on your iPhone.
  2. The Health app won’t work in iOS 8 after these steps. It will be fixed in our upcoming iOS 8.0.2 software update.

Apple promised to come out with iOS 8.0.2 in the coming days to fix original issues and also enable the Health app to work again as it doesn’t after you have downgraded.

The Tech Globe was amongst the first to report on users complaining about bending iPhone 6 devices, the issues with iOS 8 has cast a shadow over the record sales numbers of the iPhone 6. Apple stock declined 3.81% today.
