Android 5.0 Available For Samsung Galaxy S5

Users in Poland have reported that Samsung has started an over-the-air update of Galaxy S5 devices.

It is not known when the update will be available in other regions.

Maybe the update will help Samsung to increase sales on the flagship smartphone as sales has been way below expectations so far.

LG was the first company to make the new Android OS available to G3 users, Motorola and Google have also offered Lollipop to their users.

Sony and HTC have announced that they are going to make the update available within shortly as well.

LG G3 Is The First Smartphone With ANDROID 5.0 LOLLIPOP UPGRADE

Android 5.0 Lollipop is one of the most anticipated Android updates as it comes with a number of new features and design.

LG has now announced that they are going to be the first company to make the upgrade available to LG G3 customers this week. It will first be rolled out in Poland, other regions will follow in the near future.

“LG is absolutely committed to giving our customers the best mobile experiences available and bringing Android Lollipop to G3 owners as soon as possible is a top priority,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “The new features and improvements in Android 5.0 will bring a whole new user experience to the G3 and make it even better than it already is.”

Other smartphone manufacturers have also announced they are going to make an upgrade available without providing an exact timeline:

Sony: all Xperia-Z devices

Motorola: Moto E, G and X

LG G3 and G2 Android 5.0 Lollipop Update Coming

According to LG, the flagship smartphone G3 is going to get the latest Android OS within the next two month. The G2 is also going to get an update.

The company did not make any comments in regards to updates coming to other devices such as the G3 Stylus, G2, L Bello and L Fino but we expect dates for these to come in the next few weeks as well.

Here are some highlights of the new OS:

  • You are always going to be connected with Android L.

“We want to know where you are, and we want to be voice enabled. It shouldn’t matter which device you are using, we should pick up where you left off.” Google said back in June when they first showcased Android L.

Calls, text messaging, notifications etc can all show up on your PC, your search history accounts and apps – everything is synchronized between all your devices.

  • Improved battery life

Google is going to give developers access to the battery use. A battery saver mode is also going to be integrated which can increase the battery life by up to 90 minutes per day.

  • A new design

The new OS is going to have the same look and feel across all platforms.

The look and feel is clean, yet colorful, flat but also dimensional.

One of the biggest improvements that consumers are going to notice are the notifications which are much more user friendly in this version, can be viewed on the lockscreen and are customizable beyond that.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha Released – Metal Frame, AMOLED Display, 12MP Camera

Samsung Electronics has officially launched the Galaxy Alpha which we have reported on before. As we discussed in previous articles, it features a metal frame, curved corners and a soft back cover.

Here is what the company had to say:

“The Galaxy Alpha was built and designed based on the specific desires of the consumer market,” said JK Shin, CEO and Head of IT & Mobile Communication at Samsung Electronics. “With an entirely new appearance, the Galaxy Alpha focuses on both beauty and functionality combining a stunning metal frame and slim, light weight design with the same powerful hardware and features users expect from a flagship Galaxy mobile device.”

So is the new flagship enough to get the Korean giant back on track? The company has been struggling recently as they have lost a lot of market share. While Samsung is still the largest smartphone brand, their market share dropped from 32% to 25%. In China Xiaomi has taken the number one spot from Samsung as the biggest smartphone brand. Samsung is mainly not positioned well in the entry- and mid-range segment but is also facing strong competition in the high-end market from Apple, LG and HTC.

Looking at the specifications for the Galaxy Alpha we don’t think this is the game-changer and innovative device Samsung needed to strengthen their position and outpace competitors. Take the display for example, 4.7” with a resolution of 1280 x 720. The LG G3 comes in at 5.5” and 2560 x 1440. The LG G3 also has a better camera, 13MP compared to the 12MP the Galaxy Alpha offers. The HTC One M8 also features a better display, 5” and 1920 x 1080.

It comes with 32GB of internal memory but a big problem is that it does have memory expansion in form of a micro SD slot something many competitors have.

With the Galaxy Alpha, Samsung has fixed what many consumers saw as their biggest design flaw: the cheap plastic case. But the problem is the Galaxy Alpha does not deliver on the hardware and feature front. Apple is set to release the iPhone 6 on September 9th, from what Samsung has shown today, Apple and other competitors don’t have to be afraid.

LG G3 “Mini” with 5” screen showcased

LG has shown of their latest smartphone, the LG G3 Beat which is a smaller version of their flagship the G3.

Compared to the G2 mini it comes with a bigger and better screen, more RAM, internal storage and a better battery. It does however use the same processor.

Here are the specifications:

  • 5” screen with a resolution of 720 x 1280 (294 ppi)
  • Qualcom 1.2 GHz processor
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 16 GB internal storage
  • 8-megapixel camera
  • 2,540 mAh battery

The price for the G3 Beat has not been confirmed but it is rumored to be in the $400 region.

The 5” screen certainly takes “mini” to new levels.
