Notebook brands have recently adjusted their strategies in order to limit the impact tablets and smartphones have had on sales.
It seems that the strategy is going to work out for the holiday season. While overall notebook numbers are expected to see a small decline, in November it actually increased by 10%.
The two main reasons are strong HP enterprise sales and high demand in the low-cost consumer segment.
HP ordered 4 million units from ODMs, which is a 60% increase from the previous month.
All seven major vendors being Apple, Lenovo, Samsung, HP, Asus, Dell and Acer are expected to make further adjustment when it comes to their product offering which should shake things up in this space.
Asus created a whole new market segment about 7 years ago when they launched the first netbook called EeePC. It was the product which propelled Asus into becoming a giant player in the notebook market. Tablets took most of that market but Asus believes now is the time to bring back a netbook so they have revealed the EeeBook at IFA in Berlin.
The 11.6″ device will come in four different colors as you can see from the official picture. The display has a resolution of 1,366 x 768. The EeeBook has an Intel Atom processor, 2GB of RAM and either 32 or 64 GB of storage. According to Asus, the battery life is 12 hours
Chromebooks have recently sold in millions and Asus is going after that market, competing directly on price as well. The EeeBook will be available within the next month, priced at $199.
The Asus smwartwatch has been a hot topic on The Tech Globe over the last few month. The ZenWatch has now been officially released during the IFA 2014 Electronics show in Berlin.
The 1.6″ smartwatch comes in a stainless steel housing and with a leather armband. The design is high-end and even though it has a square display it doesn’t look as boxy as the Samsung Gear Live.
The Asus ZenWatch runs on Android Wear, the display has a resolution of 320 x 320 and the device runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.2GHz processor. Measuring only 7.9mm, the ZenWatch is the thinnest smartwatch so far. Did Asus sacrifice on the IP certification in order to achieve this? Unlike all competing smartwatches which are IP67 certified, Asus only has IP55 which means the ZenWatch is protected to some extend rain and dust, IP67 certified devices are completely dust and water resistant, they can be completely immersed under water for 30 minutes. If you want to read more about IP certifications, you can do that here.
Asus also pointed out a number of features of the ZenWatch when paired with an Asus smartphone: you can open certain apps, mute or search for the smartphone. We already pointed it out in a previous article, given the fact that Asus has a much weaker ecosystem compared to Samsung and LG, these features will only be useful for real Asus fans, the ZenWatch will be bought by consumers that prefer the design over that of other smartwatches.
Here are the official images of the ZenWatch, a beautiful smartwatch in our opinion.
We have written several articles about the upcoming Asus smartwatch.
A first sketch of the smartwatch was already posted on the Asus Facebook page:
The company also released a teaser video on YouTube, but actually the sketch shows more. If you want to watch the teaser video anyway, you can find it here.
Tomorrow the big unveiling will take place at IFA in Berlin. We will of course be putting together a piece for you with all the features and images but if you don’t want to wait for us to be done typing you can follow the press conference live here.
Two things are already confirmed: availability and price. Jerry Shen, CEO of Asus confirmed that the smartwatch is going to be available in October and will be priced at $199. It was earlier reported that the smartwatch would be priced at $99 – $149 but now it seems the company is going to be around the same price as the first smartwatches from LG and Samsung. This changes a few things: Asus doesn’t have an ecosystem that is as strong as Samsung or LG so it will have to convince consumers to purchase their device because of design or unique features. Can it keep up with the LG G Watch R or the Samsung Gear S, two of the best looking smartwatches so far next to the Moto 360.
We will have to wait to come up with a final verdict after the press event tomorrow.
The smartwatch market is going to be full of new releases and a race between all brands in terms of design, features and pricing. IFA will bring you some of the new devices and in exactly one week, maybe the most anticipated event will take place in Cupertino where Apple will be launching the iWatch and iPhone 6.
Asus posted an invitation on Twitter with the following quote: “Time has been transformed, and we have changed.”
Back in June we reported on the fact that Asus was planning to enter the smartwatch market. The price war is in the space is about to begin as Asus is said to launch their device at between $99 and $149.
According to IDC, the wearables market is growing quickly, set to triple this year to 19 million units and by 2018 it will reach 111.9 million units. To get a piece of the pie manufacturers are going to go up against each other when it comes to price amongst other things.
Nothing has been leaked in regards to the design from Asus yet. When it comes to that, everyone is still drooling over the Moto 360 which is set to be officially released on September 4th.
Asus has come a long way since it was established in 1989. The company started out with just motherboards but have since expanded into various segments such as notebooks, tablets, smartphones and they will also soon enter the smartwatch market which we reported on.
The company has become the fifth largest PC vendor (Lenovo, HP, Dell and Acer are ahead of them) and in the most recent quarter they reported revenues of $3.33 billion.
While a majority of the revenue comes from their mobile division (Asus is the third largest notebook manufacturer), the motherboard / component business is still huge at 14% of the total business. Asus has a strong following amongst gamers as their graphics cards and other components are regarded as some of the best on the market.
