Notebook brands have recently adjusted their strategies in order to limit the impact tablets and smartphones have had on sales.
It seems that the strategy is going to work out for the holiday season. While overall notebook numbers are expected to see a small decline, in November it actually increased by 10%.
The two main reasons are strong HP enterprise sales and high demand in the low-cost consumer segment.
HP ordered 4 million units from ODMs, which is a 60% increase from the previous month.
All seven major vendors being Apple, Lenovo, Samsung, HP, Asus, Dell and Acer are expected to make further adjustment when it comes to their product offering which should shake things up in this space.
Samsung surprisingly announced that it will stop selling notebooks and Chromebooks in Europe. Especially the Chromebook market is extremely price driven resulting in low margin but the market wasn’t expecting Samsung to take this drastic step.
According to Gartner Research, Chromebook sales will reach 5.2 million units in 2014 and now competitors such as Acer and HP who are amongst the most aggressive in terms of price and drive adoption of Chromebooks are set to benefit from Samsung pulling out of Europe.
Samsung did not give a detailed explanation as to why they are pulling out of the European market, in the end it might benefit competitors but not consumers.
Acer’s Build Your Own Cloud (BYOC) service is an offering for both the consumers and the B2B market. The company is focused on expanding the B2B part as it is less competitive in terms of price. The expansion is mainly focused on sectors such as healthcare, telecommunication, automobile and smart family. The service is compatible with all major platforms and Acer has aggressive growth targets: currently BYOC has 3 millions users, by the end of this year the goal is to reach 5 million and double to 10 million in 2015. Acer today announced the Chromebox CXI Series, a PC which is aimed at small businesses, schools and budget-conscious consumers. The entry-level model which features an Intel Celeron 2957U dual-core 1.4GHz CPU, 16GB solid state drive and 2GB memory is priced at $179.99. The 4GB model is priced at $219.99.
The solid state drive ensures that the PC is fast, it boots in about 8 seconds and resumes almost instantly from sleep mode.
“The Acer Chromebook CXI is an excellent fit for schools and any other institution or business where conserving costs and space are high priorities,” said Simon Hwang, president of Acer Stationary Computing and Display Business Group. “Due to the ease of management, the Chromebox can significantly reduce technical support and consequently lower the total cost of ownership.”
Asus has come a long way since it was established in 1989. The company started out with just motherboards but have since expanded into various segments such as notebooks, tablets, smartphones and they will also soon enter the smartwatch market which we reported on.
The company has become the fifth largest PC vendor (Lenovo, HP, Dell and Acer are ahead of them) and in the most recent quarter they reported revenues of $3.33 billion.
While a majority of the revenue comes from their mobile division (Asus is the third largest notebook manufacturer), the motherboard / component business is still huge at 14% of the total business. Asus has a strong following amongst gamers as their graphics cards and other components are regarded as some of the best on the market.
